The Portland regional ITS data archive uses a variety of information technologies to retrieve, store, and provide access to data.
This archive implements a data warehousing strategy in that it retains large amounts of raw operational data for analysis and decision
making processes, and in that these data are stored independently of their operational sources, allowing the execution of time-consuming queries
with no impact on critical operations uses.
Database Server
The database server houses the data collected by PORTAL. High quality hardware has been employed to minimize user wait time for dynamic queries.Data are stored and accessed using PostgreSQL, a powerful open source relational database system.Detector locations within the database have been geocoded for interoperability with geographic information systems (GIS).

The database server is a SunFire V240 with two 1.28 GHz Sun UltraSparc processors and 4GB
of memory. The machine runs Sun Solaris.

Web Server
Apache HTTP server is the web server and PHP provides web based user interface.PHP is a server-side, cross-platform scripting language for writing web-based applications. It allows you to embed program logic in HTML pages, which enables you to serve dynamic web pages. PHP allows creation of web-based user interfaces that interact with PostgreSQL.

Storage
The RDBMS stores data physically on a 1.2 Terabyte redundant array of independent disks (RAID) providing both high-speed access and increased reliability through redundancy in the event of hardware failure. Offsite backups of the raw freeway loop detector data are done once a week.
